It is like it has become popular to like them. So young fans just do what the crowd wants them to do. Right now shipping slash is “in”. So girls jump on every bromance and try to make it in to a romance.

I think a lot of the reason it seems overrated is that it really has become such a hot topic. Not just with fanfic - there will always be fic, for any two (or more) characters in anything - but because of the impact such relationships are having.
It is a bromance, I know that’s all it is, I’m not delusional, but society is rapidly changing and tv shows aren’t catching up.
What’s the point in teaching us to be accepting of all people, if the only heroes we get to watch are straight, cis, white men? When was the last time you saw a prominent character who was gay, or just not straight, without their entire role revolving around their sexuality? When will we stop having bromances dangled in front of us, that as you say become overrated and overhyped when we could just as easily have an actual romance?For me, it’s the trend of bromances that are becoming overrated; Arthur and Merlin, Castiel and Dean, Rizzoli and Isles, all the Sherlocks and Watsons - they’re a constant reminder that there are parts of my life that are apparently never going to be identifiable on screen.
I’ve started writing fan fiction again, if only to give myself something to do while I’m unemployed. Its a wonderful writing exercise.
